This is the US Marine Corps version of the Harrier II and is used for close-support dive attacks using bombs and rockets, operating from land or ship bases. It entered USMC light-attack service in 1984 as a replacement for the aging A-4 Skyhawk, and was welcomed for its ability to operate without an airstrip. [See also GR.5 Harrier II]
